Description Group of seven small-size old wooden Japanese panels previously used with a pair of wooden lanterns. Shoji windows and doors are normally finished with a covering of crisp white rice paper before being installed Condition The panels are in fair to good condition, save many visible (yet aesthetically pleasing) wear marks such as wood dents and scratches which were received during their previous term of service. There are also some stains and bits of dried paper stuck to the frame. The panes are not entirely symmetrical and some differences in size between each pane. Size: Height: 11.1 inches (28.5 centimeters) Width (at top): 6.4 inches (16.5 centimeters) Width (at bottom): 4.1 inches (10.5 centimeters) Weight: 17.6 ounces (504 grams) More About Japanese Shoji Doors and Windows Shoji are one of the styles of interior and exterior door and window used in the traditional Japanese home. Shoji are traditionally made with wooden frames covered with a special plain or delicately patterned white paper called shoji gami, with little or no additional decoration. High-quality shoji may include intricate and complex wooden lattice-work, requiring artistic as well as technical expertise on the part of the maker, who are known as tateguya-san in Japanese. Shoji normally receive a fresh coating of paper around the first of the year, erasing any holes or stains caused by little fingers and filling the home with a crisp, fresh atmosphere wholly suited to the optimistic spirit
